The Transfer Challenge

As a transfer student, you only have a couple of years to get to know campus resources, faculty, staff and fellow students. Sign up today to participate in the Fall Quarter Transfer Challenge and experience some of the amazing things that UC San Diego has to offer.  The Transfer Challenge is created for first-year transfer students, and is designed to help you:

  • Meet other new transfer students - attend activities and complete challenges together!
  • Learn about campus resources AND yourself as you earn points that lead to great prizes

Welcome Week Challenge: College Connections

Activity (10 points):  Attend UnOlympics with your College
  • Date: Wednesday, September 26
  • Time: 1-4 pm
  • Location: Spanos Track and Field (Near RIMAC)

UnOlympics is a UCSD Tradition and a Welcome Week favorite!  The Undergraduate Colleges come together and compete for the Golden Shoe trophy and bragging rights for the year.  The event features team competitions and a dance performance.  Check the Welcome Week calendar and join your College for a practice session to learn the dance, and on the field for a fun, funny, and energizing time - this is one for your UC San Diego bucket list for sure!

Week 1 Challenge: Academic Connections

Activity (10 points): Tour the Geisel Library

Join us to learn more about the famous Geisel Library and how you can best use this resource.  This guided tour of the  library sshowcases the wide variety of study spaces, library collections, technologies, equipment, and amenities available to you.  RSVP for one of two dates for this activity so that we can let the tour guide know how many to expect.

  • Write down all of your professor/TA Office Hours on the Challenge Worksheet
  • Attend office hours with at least one professor/TA and have them sign off on your worksheet

Bonus Points (2 points): Participate in the Dine with a Prof or Coffee with a Prof Program

Student Affairs and The Undergraduate Colleges provide opportunities for students to engage with current faculty or TAs over coffee or lunch for FREE!

Week 2 Challenge: Career Connections

Activity (10 points): Using the MBTI to Identify Your Values and Strengths

Join us as the CSI – Communication & Leadership staff present an interactive session on using the Meyers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) to help you identify your values and strengths.  This session is a great tool in helping you succeed as a student and planning for your future!  Please RSVP in advance for this session as space is limited and you will be provided with an MBTI assessment survey.

  • Time: 2:00-4:00 pm
  • Location: Student Leadership Chambers, Price Center East

Complete the Week 2 submission form by Monday, October 15, 2018* and tell us about your experience using the MBTI to look at your values and strengths to earn 10 points!

Challenge (5 points):  DROP IN at the UCSD Career Center

    • Write or update your resume
    • Take it to the UCSD Career Center for review and recommendations from a peer advisor - MON-FRI 10:00 am-3:00 pm.

Bonus Points (2 points): Learn About YOUR CCR Opportunities

The Co-Curricular Record (CCR) is an official record of your out-of-classroom learning that can be printed with your transcript and has the UC San Diego seal. Learn more about opportunities to enhance your CCR and tell us how you would use this tool to your benefit to gain bonus points!

Week 3 Challenge: Community Connections

Activity (10 points): Presentation Skills for Transfers

Join us as the CSI – Communication & Leadership staff present an interactive session with information and strategies to effectively present or facilitate in front of an array of audiences. Learn about best practices on preparing and delivering professional presentations, preparing for group activities, and making the most of your conversations

  • Date: Monday, October 15 
  • Time: 1:00-2:00 pm
  • Location: Warren College Room, Price Center West (3rd floor)

Complete the Week 3 submission form by Monday, October 22, 2018* and tell us about your experience to earn 10 points!

Challenge (5 points):  One Button Studio

  • Utilize the One Button Studio (a free resource for students!) to record a 3 minute speech to see where you can improve your public speaking skills or classroom presentation skills. You can use this challenge to prepare for a class presentation or just to get an idea of your presentation strengths and areas for improvement!

Bonus Points (2 points): Submit your One Button Studio Presentation
  • Submit your recording from the One Button Studio and receive feedback from a panel of professional staff members (i.e. your Assistant Deans of Student Affairs - who do a lot of presentations, interviews, training sessions, and more! throughout the year).  If you have questions on specific areas of your presentation style feel free to let us know!

Week 4 Challenge: Financial Wellness

Activity (10 points): Money Matters! A guide to Financial Wellness in College and Beyond

College is expensive!  Join us as we discuss ways to create financial balance and gain freedom from financial stress.  Learn techniques for saving, budgeting, and negotiating to create a financial plan that makes "cents" for you at this stage of life and beyond.  RSVP Online to guarantee your spot!

Challenge (5 points):  Create a Monthly Budget

  • Create a monthly budget and think about how you are using the money available to you.  You may use a template you received at the presentation, an Excel file, or a sample that you find online - whatever works for you.

Bonus Points (2 points): Submit your One Button Studio Presentation
  • Reflect on your financial wellness as you plan for your time as a student and beyond.  What are tangible ways that you can challenge yourself to save money now and in the future?  What would you like to do with any money you are able to save?

Week 5 Challenge: Wellness

Activity (10 points): Hungry for Healthy: Healthy Cooking on a Budget

Join representatives from The Zone and UCSD’s Student Health Advocates for a cooking demonstration and learn how to cook a healthy, yummy meal on a budget. Samples will be provided at the end of the workshop. Space is limited to 25 participants so RSVP today!

  • Location: The Zone (1st floor of the Price Center to the left of Jamba Juice)

Challenge (5 points):  FREE Body Composition Analysis

  • Go to The Zone for a FREE Body Composition Analysis . Every Tuesday from 9:30-10:15 am, The Zone offers this service which includes: body weight, percentage body fat, total body water, and blood pressure. One free assessment per quarter is available to registered UCSD students.

Bonus Points (2 points): Submit a Healthy Meal Selfie
  • We love food too - bonus points if it is healthy and looks delicious! To earn your bonus points this week, upload an Instagram-style photo of a healthy meal you made or purchased for yourself.

*Participants should make every attempt to submit verification required to receive points by Noon on the Monday following the Challenge.  However, we understand that schedules may prevent that on a weekly basis so our final deadline for all submissions will be Noon on Monday, November 19.  Entries received after the final program deadline will not be awarded.
