FYE Discussion Leader (DL) Application

Please read through the following information carefully. These materials must be completed and submitted on time in order for you to be considered for a First Year Experience (FYE) or Transfer Year Experience (TYE) Discussion Leader position.

In Fall 2023, five Undergraduate Colleges will offer a First Year Experience (FYE) and/or a Transfer Year Experience (TYE) course as follows:

  • Revelle College: FYE (REV 1) and TYE (REV 2)
  • Eleanor Roosevelt College: FYE (ERC 1) and TYE (ERC 2)
  • Thurgood Marshall College: FYE (TMC 1) and TYE (TMC 2)
  • Eleanor Roosevelt College: FYE (ERC 1) and TYE (ERC 2)
  • Sixth College: FYE (SXTH 1)
  • Earl Warren College: FYE (WARR 1) TBD

These courses are designed to help new students academically and socially transition to UC San Diego. We are recruiting undergraduate students with an interest in collaboration, peer mentoring, teaching, learning, and leadership, to serve as Discussion Leaders (DLs) to facilitate discussion sections in these courses.

First-time DLs will participate in paid training (Spring Quarter 2023). DLs will also complete all relevant online training (e.g., FERPA- "Confidentiality of  Student  Records  and  Privacy  Rights,"  "UC  Sexual  Violence  and Sexual Harassment Prevention Training," "UC Cyber Security  Awareness  Fundamentals,"  "Preparing  for Success: Online Course for Instructional Assistants").

All online and/or in-person training for first-time DLs are eligible for paid work hours if/when completed in Spring 2023. Returning DLs may have a brief refresher meeting in early Fall 2023.

First-time DL Training

  • Spring Quarter 2023
  • 7-10 hours per week
  • Times/location TBD

Hours per Week

  • 4-6 hours per week during Fall Quarter 2023
  • Option to teach multiple sections

Compensation

  • All NEW first-time Discussion Leader candidates will be paid $16.90 per hour for Training Sessions in 2023

Minimum Qualifications – Candidates must

  • Be available for all Spring Quarter 2023 and select hours for discussion sections during Fall Quarter 2023
  • Enroll in 195 instructional apprenticeship course for 4 units of academic credit during Fall Quarter 2023 
  • Pay UC San Diego Student Services fees each quarter while working

Core Responsibilities

  • Utilize concepts from Spring Training to create weekly lesson plans
  • Lead a discussion section of 10-25 students (option to teach multiple sections of the same course)
  • Create a fun and engaging environment for students to digest concepts used in the lecture
  • Mandatory: attend lecture, lead section and hold office hours weekly

Conditions of Employment

  1. Must pay UC San Diego Student Services fees each quarter working (must have paid SP22 UCSD Student Services fees or be an incoming Fall 2023 new or readmit to work summer)
  2. Upon hire, MUST be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the U.S. Original, unexpired documents REQUIRED. No photocopies accepted. No exceptions.

  • The selection process will include an interview for applicants who submit the required application materials by the deadline and who are screened to continue in the process. Candidates will be interviewed by a panel consisting of staff and/or faculty.
  • Candidates selected for interviews will be considered for Freshman and Transfer discussion leader positions. Candidates will be asked for a preference, but the final decision will be made by the hiring committee.
