FYE Discussion Leader Application

We are pleased that you have chosen to apply for the First Year Experience Discussion Leader Position. Please review the following information prior to completing your application.

Procedure

  • To be considered for the position, you will need to complete this application by no later than 3pm on Friday, January 26, 2018.

Employment Information

  • Successful candidates must be in good academic standing and have completed 90 UC San Diego units by the beginning of Fall, 2018.
  • Successful candidates must have completed the first three quarters of their College’s Writing Program OR equivalent by the beginning of Fall 2018.
  • All Discussion Leader candidates are required to successfully complete a 7-week training in weeks 3-9 during Spring quarter, 2018. Please plan to attend either the 4-6pm training on Mondays OR 5-7pm training on Tuesdays. Training location: Thurgood Marshall Conference Room 127.
  • Important note: Participation in Spring training is not a guarantee of holding a position as a Discussion Leader in Fall. Discussion Leader positions are contingent upon successful completion of training.

Compensation

  • Spring 2018
    • All FYE Discussion Leaders will be provided payment ($11.85/hr) during spring training.
  • Fall 2018
    • First-time Discussion Leaders will receive 4 units of course credit for serving as a discussion leader in the Fall.
    • All returning Discussion Leaders will be compensated with pay for the Fall course. More information will be provided at a later date.

PLEASE NOTE: some on-campus departments prohibit students from holding a concurrent job. It is recommended that if you are currently employed at UCSD that you check with your existing supervisor.

Specific Duties, Responsibilities, and Expectations

  • Attend Spring training sessions (Spring 2018)
  • Attend all TA-Discussion Leader meetings (Fall 2018)
  • Attend all lectures of the course they are assigned (Fall 2018)
  • Lead one discussion section, 1 hour per week (Fall 2018)
  • Assist with grading and proctoring for the course (Fall 2018)
  • Hold office hours - 1 hour per week (Fall 2018)
  • Other duties as needed for this particular course, such as administrative duties, quizzes, and preparation for sections (Fall 2018)
