Academic Standing Review
There are three levels of academic standing at UC San Diego:
- Good Standing - term and cumulative grade point average (GPA) are 2.0 or higher
- Academic Notice - term GPA is at least 1.5 but less than 2.0 or the cumulative GPA is less than 2.0 and the student is not Subject to Disqualification
- Subject to Disqualification - term GPA is less than 1.5 or the student completed two successive terms on Academic Notice and the cumulative GPA is below 2.0
Refer to Back on Track for additional information about academic standing and answers to frequently asked questions.
Academic Disqualification
Students facing academic disqualification have been on Academic Notice or Subject to Disqualification for multiple quarters. The Colleges conduct a holistic review of each student’s academic and advising records to determine whether they will be disqualified or allowed to continue enrollment at UC San Diego.
Option to Appeal
Students with documented evidence of serious and extenuating circumstances that will no longer impact their academic performance, may choose to appeal their disqualification.
Students whose appeals are approved are allowed to enroll in Fall Quarter and must earn a term GPA of at least 2.0 to continue enrollment for the rest of the academic year. Students who do not appeal or have their appeal denied will be dropped from currently enrolled courses (including Summer Session), resulting in a full refund of tuition and cancellation of health insurance.
Returning to UC San Diego after Disqualification
Students may request to return to UC San Diego after at least one full academic year away. Note: return after disqualification is available for Fall Quarter only. Refer to Returning to UC San Diego after Disqualification for details.
